I encourage you to explore our Sociology Department at UIC, both on the web and in person. You will find an energetic community of scholars, who are committed to teaching, to research, and to using their sociological expertise to engage with the world around us for the public good. As the new Department Head, I am discovering the excitement in this department, university and city. I came to UIC because I wanted to be part of this up and coming department. We have faculty who are experts in the globalization processes in our current world, particularly the changing urban landscape. We also have faculty who study racial, ethnic, and gender inequalities in contemporary American society. Other faculty focus their attention on work, labor markets, and organizations. And of course, with one of the largest health centers in the world on our campus, we also have faculty with expertise in health and medicine. Our faculty excel in teaching, research, and service.
But we don't only have leading scholars, we have graduate students whose research is innovative and already being published. We have students with research topics as varied as classifying American cities by their culinary types, issues surrounding biracial families, representations of Black women in rap music, and young gay men's identities. Our undergraduate major is small so that every student gets the attention to develop their writing skills, computer literacy, and critical thinking. I invite you to explore this web site to learn more about our department, faculty, and students, and to use our contact information to get in touch with us. This is a productive and progressive sociology faculty who do work that matters. We are lucky to work in a university committed to engaging with the community, with a mission to understand Great Cities, and in a college committed to using faculty expertise to promote social justice. Our faculty are equally dedicated to engaging in rigorous research and contributing to the development of basic knowledge while also making substantial contributions to the community at large, and communicating our research findings in the classroom and for the public.
