The successful applicant to our program has substantive interests that overlap with the strengths of our department.  Applicants’ GRE performance is considered within the context of other predictors of student success such as coursework and grades.  A major is sociology or a related social science field is preferred but not mandatory.   Students who are accepted attend our program on a full-time basis and are admitted for the fall term only. Our degree programs are not organized for “night school,” although we do have evening classes.  There is no foreign language requirement.

The Department of Sociology does not admit non-degree students. If you are interested in attending courses in the department without committing to the program, you may apply as a general, unassigned non-degree student under the program code 20FS1780NDEG. There is no program associated with this code and you will need to obtain permission from the department and the course instructor to register for courses.

Applications for Fall 2009 admission are due January 1, 2009. Please apply early as all materials must be received by the application deadline.

Application Requirements

GRE scores are required. Scores should be sent directly from ETS to the Office of Admissions and Records. There are no minimum scores for the GRE. GRE scores are valid for 5 years. Please insure that your scores are still valid. You should contact ETS (www.ets.org) directly with questions specifically relating to the GRE or to register for a testing session.

TOEFL scores are required for international applicants. The minimum acceptable score for the paper-based TOEFL is 520. The minimum acceptable computer-based TOEFL score is 190. Most programs require higher scores. The TOEFL must have been taken within two years of application.

Official Transcripts from all institutions of higher learning attended should be sent directly to the Office of Admissions and Records at the address below. In addition to this, photocopies of transcripts should be sent to the department with your other application materials.

The Personal Statement is a short statement (2-3 pages) detailing how and why you decided to pursue a PhD in sociology, including personal, work, and research experiences.  Applicant should indicate their present research interests as well as any information they want the graduate committee to consider in their deliberations. The personal statement should be sent directly to the department.

The Writing Sample should be a sample of your academic writing and should be sent directly to the department. There is no set length for the writing sample.

Three letters of recommendation should be sent to the department in signed, sealed envelopes. These letters can be sent directly from the referee or can be enclosed with other application materials.

The application fee of $50 (domestic) or $60 (international) should be submitted online or mailed to the Admissions and Records along with the Payment Page (http://www.uic.edu/depts/oar/grad/payment_grad.html).
