Spring 2008
Barbara Risman
is interviewed in a Northwest News Group article about the importance
of adult women spending time with their female friends. The Northwest
News Group includes two daily newspapers in Chicago's suburbs: the
Northwest Herald and the Kane County Chronicle. Our sociology senior capstone seminar, taught by Dick Barrett, developed a wiki site during the fall semester of 2007. The wiki can be found at: http://www.chicagodata.wetpaint.com. It is available as a data site for other instructors and students to use when doing research on the city.

Winter 2008 The American Sociological Association's newsletter, Footnotes, carried an article by Michael Rodriguez which highlighted the UIC immigration mobilization rights research project.
William Bielby is featured
in a sidebar to a Fortune magazine article (Dec. 10 issue) about its
rankings of the 25 most powerful businesspeople in the world. Biebly,
a scholar of organizational theory, is highlighted in the "Scary
Power" group of "people business hates to see coming".
Kathleen Crittenden, UIC professor
emerita of sociology, is highlighted in a Philippine Daily Inquirer
article about foreign-based scientists who are taking part in the Philippines
Department of Science and Technology's Balik Scientist Program. Lorena Garcia was a featured guest on 90.5 Radio Arte on February 13th. She spoke about sexuality among Latino/a youth. Barbara Risman is quoted in an article from The Oregonian newspaper on January 1, 2008 about unmarried women having babies and society's changing attitudes concerning marriage.
Richard Barrett is quoted
in a study about breast cancer diagnosis coming late for women who live
in gentrifying neighborhoods. The article was published widely
in both print and electronic media after being picked up by the
United Press International on January 31st. Kerry Ann Rockquemore is quoted in a Washington Times article, February 22nd, about how Sen. Barack Obama's rising political career has brought attention to the issue of multi-racial identities in America. Cedric Herring is quoted in a Louisiana Weekly article about color discrimination within the African-American community. |
