UIC graduate students in Sociology may be eligible to apply for the following awards:
Rue Bucher Memorial Award
For Qualitative Studies in Social Process
Applications are invited each spring semester from advanced graduate students at UIC for this research award honoring the late M. Rue Bucher, Professor of Sociology at UIC. Students working for doctoral degrees in any unit of UIC are eligible to apply for the award, which consists of a monetary grant of $1000.
Research using qualitative or field methods is eligible for support, and appropriate topics include (but are not limited to) studies of occupations and professions, health and illness, and gender in society, areas of research to which Rue Bucher contributed. Support for research expenses such as interview transcriptions, computer software, and research travel will be considered. An interdisciplinary, inter-institutional jury will judge the proposals.
Proposals should specify the topic and its theoretical and/or practical significance, the site or sample and the state of the researcher's entree, the proposed methods (interviews, observations, documents, etc.) and the research design in sufficient detail and clarity to allow blind referees to judge the worthiness of the project and the likelihood of its accomplishment. A brief budget explaining how the award would be spend should be included. Approval of the student's advisor is required, and the original title sheet of the submitted proposal must carry the advisor's signature. Documentation of human subjects institutional review (or exemption) will be required before any award can be made (but not necessarily before submitting the proposal). Proposals should not exceed 2000 words.
